You will practise producing various styles of written English, from informal letters and emails to reports and academic pieces. You will also study grammar and vocabulary relevant to the writing tasks. The course will focus on the difficulties non-native speakers face when writing in English.
We will select from a range of topics depending on the needs of the groups. Topics typically include complex sentence structure, linking expressions, formal/informal English, and effect on the reader.
Write about complex subjects in a style appropriate to your purpose and reader.
Write a clear, flowing text using a wide range of grammar and vocabulary.
Present a case in a text with an effective logical structure.
Help your reader notice and remember significant points.
Summarise the main points of longer texts.
Students should be advanced speakers of English (levels C1/2 by the Common European Framework of Reference; level 2 or above by the National Qualifications Framework; approximately Cambridge CAE or CPE).
There will be a variety of exercises in class, including analysis of model texts, discreet grammar and vocabulary exercises, and opportunities to do some writing and to read other students' work. These exercises will involve individual, pair and group work. There will be homework every week – several different pieces of writing will be set during the course (approx 350-400 words each), and in weeks when no new tasks are set you will be expected to rewrite pieces you have done according to the feedback you have received from the tutor and/or fellow students.
Course materials are distributed at each class. No books are required for the course.
