Course outline

What is the course about?

This course will help you improve your accuracy and develop the writing skills you need to communicate effectively.

What topics will we cover?

We will select from a range of topics depending on the needs of the groups. Topics typically include accurate use of grammar and vocabulary, formal and informal English, structuring paragraphs, using linking words to connect ideas and writing for specific readers.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Write a detailed text on a range of subjects related to your interests.
Express yourself in a clear, well-structured text.
Pass on detailed information.
Give reasons for or against a point of view.
Select a style appropriate to your purpose and reader.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should be fairly confident speakers of English (level B2 / working towards C1 by the Common European Framework of Reference; level 2 by the National Qualifications Framework; approximately Cambridge FCE or CAE).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In class, you will analyse models of different styles of writing, study grammar and vocabulary relevant to the writing tasks, and get feedback on written work. Weekly homework assignments are set as a follow-up to class work. Students are encouraged to read as much as possible outside the class in order to assist with their own writing fluency and build vocabulary.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Course materials are distributed in each class. No books are required for the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. To be assessed for this course please come along to a Humanities drop-in-advice session. These take place as follows:
Term time
Mondays and Thursdays 12.30-13.30 and 17.30-18.30
Non term time
Mondays 17.30-18.30
Thursdays 12.30-13.30.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Your tutor will advise you what course to do next. He/she may advise you to continue with Writing Skills. Other possible courses include Grammar in Practice stage 2, ESOL through Journalism, Writing Good English and English Pronunciation for Speakers of Other Languages (Drama department).
