Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is for fairly confident speakers of English who want to review and extend their grammar and speak and write more accurately.

What topics will we cover?

We will select grammar topics depending on the needs of the groups. Topics could include tense and aspect, conditionals, passive voice, and modal verbs. We will also work on vocabulary, and will discuss effective ways of studying outside the class.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Identify and correct some common mistakes in your spoken and/or written English.
Identify areas of your English that can be improved.
Devise strategies for making progress in these areas.
Distinguish between grammar mistakes and vocabulary mistakes.
Analyse the structure of your sentences.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should be fairly confident speakers of English (working towards level B2 / level B2 by the Common European Framework of Reference; level 2 by the National Qualifications Framework; approximately Cambridge FCE and above). Students should be able to take part in authentic conversations of moderate length and complexity, handle most practical tasks in everyday situations (e.g. telephone enquiries, asking for a refund etc.), understand newspaper articles and summarise the main points, and write short letters.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will have opportunities to review and extend your grammar through grammar exercises, speaking activities, and writing tasks. Classes will consist of short presentations from your tutor, pair and group work, and class discussion. You will be expected to do some homework each week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Handouts will be provided by the tutor. No books are required for the course, but we would recommend a good grammar reference (e.g. Oxford Practice Grammar).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. To be assessed for this course please come along to a Humanities drop-in-advice session. These take place as follows:
Term time
Mondays and Thursdays 12.30-13.30 and 17.30-18.30
Non term time
Mondays 17.30-18.30
Thursdays 12.30-13.30.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will receive regular informal feedback in class, and feedback on any homework you submit. At the end of the course your tutor will help you assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Your tutor will advise you what course to do next. Depending on the progress you make, he/she may advise you to continue with Grammar in Practice Stage 1 and/or Writing Skills, or possibly Grammar in Practice Stage 2. Other courses include ESOL through Journalism and English Pronunciation for Speakers of Other Languages (Drama department).
