Course outline

What is the course about?

This course prepares you for the five parts of the exam: reading, writing, use of English, listening and speaking. Over the course you will develop skills, fluency and accuracy. You will also gain practice in the exam tasks.

What topics will we cover?

Topics include:
Work
Education
Technology
The arts and entertainment
Health & fitness
The media and the news
Global issues
Communication.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Listen to, and follow with understanding, a range of recorded speech, such as radio or television programmes.
Use language flexibly and effectively for social and professional purposes.
Express yourself with a high level of fluency.
Read and understand complex factual and literary texts, and specialised articles.
Write clear, well-structured text about complex subjects in a letter, an essay or a report, selecting the style appropriate to the target reader.
Consistently maintain a high degree of grammatical accuracy.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is at level C1 of Common European Framework (often described as 'advanced') and above level 2 of the ESOL Core Curriculum. You need to do an assessment of your language skills before we can enrol you to make sure you are at a suitable level for the course.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through a range of activities, as a whole group, as a small group and in pairs. There will be practice with past exam papers. There will be about 30 minutes of homework to do after each session.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please buy CAE Expert coursebook, ISBN-13: 978-1405880794 (about £20) which has a cd-rom with tests for lots of extra practice. Please bring a ring binder and a pen. You pay for the exam directly to one of Cambridge's approved centres. There are 19 centres in London. The test costs about £110.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
