Course outline

What is the course about?

This course prepares you for the five parts of the exam: reading, writing, use of English, listening and speaking. Over the 80 hours of the course you will develop skills, fluency and accuracy. You will also gain practice in the exam tasks.
This course is for people who are not living permanently in the UK, including au pairs, and individuals studying at a UK university (who are not eligible for our ESOL Skills for Life courses).
PLEASE NOTE: The exams are at another centre. You are responsible for arranging to take the test (see section, Are there any other costs?).

What topics will we cover?

Topics include:
- work
- study
- technology
- arts and entertainment
- sport and healthy living
- the media and news
- the environment.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- understand, summarise and find information in a range of written and audio texts
- use verb tenses to effectively convey the sequence of events
- write a range of texts (letters, emails, eassys, articles, reports, review, formal and informal letters).
- take part in discussions and conversations
- talk continuously on a subject for a minute or more.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is at level B2 of Common European Framework (often described as 'intermediate') and level 1 of the ESOL Core Curriculum. You need to do an assessment of your language skills before we can enrol you to make sure you are at a suitable level for the course.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through a range of activities, as a whole group, as a small group and in pairs. There will be practice with past exam papers. There will be about 30 minutes of homework to do after each session.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please buy First Certificate Expert coursebook, ISBN-13: 978-1405880824 (about £20) which has a cd-rom with tests for lots of extra practice. Please bring a ring binder and a pen. There will also be a short fiction book to read from the Penguin Readers range (about £7). You will be advised on the title to buy.
You pay for the exam directly to one of Cambridge's approved centres. There are 19 centres in London. The test costs about £110.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
