Course outline

What is the course about?

This is an intensive course to prepare you for the IELTS examination, academic strand.

IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE
You must already have been studying English and have a level 2 qualification. This course is not aimed at improving your English language skills.

You are responsible for arranging to take the test.

What topics will we cover?

We will cover the format of the exam tasks: reading, listening, speaking and writing. There will be practice with exam tasks and follow up activities. As explained above, the focus is getting ready for the exam and not on points of language.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- understand the format of the exam
- be confident in doing the exam tasks
- achieve a score of 6.5 - 7 (or more) in the exam
For more information on the format of the exam, please go to, https://www.teachers.cambridgeesol.org/ts/exams/academicenglish/ielts.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is at Level 2 of the ESOL Core Curriculum (often described as 'upper intermediate', and level C1 of the Common European Framework).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught with a range of activities as a whole group, as small groups and in pairs. There will be practice with past exam papers. You should review the activities after the class and be prepared to follow up independently any areas of language that you have forgotten.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a ringbinder, A4 lined paper and a pen.
Course materials will be provided but you may like to get:
Common mistakes at IELTS Advanced and how to avoid them, Julie Moore, CUP 2007.
Cambridge Vocabulary for IELTS with answers and audio CD, Pauline Cullen, CUP 2008
Cambridge Grammar for IELTS Student's Book with answers and audio CD,Diane Hopkins, CUP 2006
IMPORTANT
The exam will not be taken at City Lit and City Lit has no involvement in the application to take the exam or receiving of results. You need to arrange to take your test at an independent centre. There are nine test centres across London, including one a short walking distance from City Lit. Please see www.ielts.org to find a centre and download an application form. The test typically costs £110. It will be a good idea to apply as soon as you know you have a place on the course to be sure of having a test promptly at the end.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. We will be holding interview and assessment days. Please contact us to make an appointment.
You will need to bring evidence (eg a certificate) of having completed an ESOL level 2 qualification or an equivalent (eg Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English). You will do an assessment to confirm your level in the individual skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. We will also want to know that you have established good independent learning habits, for instance reading, listening to and watching a range of media, keeping vocabulary notes and actively noticing how English is used colloquially. For this reason, we prioritise individuals who have been living in the UK for at least a year.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

If you achieve a score of 6.5 or 7 it is likely you can apply for a university course (depending on the individual course requirements). You may want to continue improving your English with ESOL courses in the Humanities department or Pronunciation courses in the Drama department at City Lit.

General information and advice on courses at City Lit is available from the Information and Advice Shop, open Monday to Friday 12:00 – 19:00 during term time, and Monday to Friday 12:00 – 17:00 out of term time. See the course guide for term dates and further details.
