Improving your understanding of key elements of English grammar and sentence structure in order to feel more confident about editing your own writing.
We will study grammar terminology and English language structure.
The course will introduce you to (or allow you to brush up on) various grammatical terms within the different topics covered. These will include parts of speech, sentence structure, verbs and verb tenses, functions of words, punctuation, common errors in writing, etc.
- Name and Identify parts of speech (nouns, verbs etc)
- Identify a sentence vs a fragment (clauses and phrases)
- Identify different types of sentences (simple, compound, complex)
- Describe the functions of words (subject, etc)
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role and function of verbs
- Use basic punctuation
- Recognise the different tenses of verbs and Explain their uses
- Identify and correct common sentence errors.
This workshop is particularly geared to speakers of English as a first language, or to people who have been through the British educational system, and who feel insecure about their grammar. It is not an English as a Foreign Language grammar course. It should be particularly useful to those students who wish to improve their writing skills, are planning to study a foreign language, would like to help their children with their homework, or would like to teach EFL/ESOL. As the focus is on grammatical terminology and language structure, you will need to be able to express yourself clearly and fluently in writing (approximately GCSE grade C level).
Each week the tutor will present the topic for that session. You will then work through various practical exercises, both in class and at home, in order to reinforce the information presented.
The tutor will provide handouts throughout the course. You should bring writing materials.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. To be assessed for this course please come along to a Humanities drop-in-advice session. These take place as follows:
Term time
Mondays and Thursdays 12.30-13.30 and 17.30-18.30
Non term time
Mondays 17.30-18.30
Thursdays 12.30-13.30.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will be able to assess your progress through exercises and written work throughout the course.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
