Course outline

What is the course about?

This course will help you develop your reading and writing. You will learn to plan and draft writing and read and understand longer pieces of text. You will take an entry 3 exam at the end of this course.

What topics will we cover?

Your tutor will decide from a range of topics and ask you what topics you want to cover. Topics may include:
-locating information in a piece of writing
-planning writing
-finding and correcting mistakes in pieces of writing
-writing longer sentences and using paragraphs
-writing letters.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- plan, draft and edit your writing
- proof-read your work for errors
- use full-stops and capital letters with confidence
- develop strategies for spelling more complicated words
- use a dictionary and a thesaurus
- read newspapers, official letters and other documents
- listen to and take part in class discussions.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an entry 3 course for people who are fluent speakers of English. To do this course you will need to be able to read at least a page of a piece of writing, and write a few full sentences. You also need to be able to express yourself clearly.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching will be in a supportive group setting, which involves pair and small group work. The interactive whiteboard and computers will help your learning. Handouts and worksheets will allow you to build up a folder of work. You will be given homework on a regular basis.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper, and a file to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will give you verbal feedback as a group during the session, and written feedback on the paper exercises you do. You will decide individual learning goals with your tutor and see your progress over the term by keeping a folder of work.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will be able to talk to your tutor in one to one meetings about your learning (tutorials) or ask to speak to the tutor. Your tutor will ask for your feedback as a group at different times during the session and in course reviews. You will be able to formally record your views on the course at the end.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

When you successfully complete this course and pass the entry 3 exam, you can join a level 1 course.
