Course outline

What is the course about?

This course will help you get started in reading and writing. You will learn to write simple sentences, spell key words and use punctuation. You will take an entry 1 exam at the end of this course.

What topics will we cover?

Your tutor will decide from a range of topics and ask you what topics you want to cover. Topics may include: simple sentence structure, spelling strategies, how to use capital letters and full stops.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-fill in forms with your details
-read everyday words and notices
-spell words you need to use on a day-to-day basis
-talk about subjects that interest you
-write simple sentences using full stops and capital letters.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for people who are fluent speakers of English. To do this course you will have to know the alphabet, read some everyday words and be able to write your personal details (name, surname etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching will be in a supportive group setting, which involves pair and small group work. The interactive whiteboard and computers will help your learning. Handouts and worksheets will allow you to build up a folder of work. You will be given homework on a regular basis.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a file to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will give you verbal feedback as a group during the session, and written feedback on the paper exercises you do. You will decide individual learning goals with your tutor and see your progress over the term by keeping a folder of work.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will be able to talk to your tutor in one to one meetings about your learning (tutorials) or ask to speak to the tutor. Your tutor will ask for your feedback as a group at different times during the session and in course reviews. You will be able to formally record your views on the course at the end.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

When you successfully complete this course and pass the entry 1 exam, you can join the entry 2 course.
