This lower-intermediate course will help you develop your English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. You will take the speaking and listening exam and have the opportunity to complete the full entry 3 certificate by progressing onto ESOL reading and writing entry 3 in February. We aim to prioritise places for adults permanently settled in the UK.

This course will give you confidence using English for work, study and socialising. You will develop your English language skills in writing, reading, speaking and listening and take the entry 3 Cambridge ESOL Speaking and Listening exam. .
Your tutor will decide from a range of topics, and ask you what topics you want to cover. Topics include:
- Life in different countries and the UK
- Lifelong learning
- Job opportunities
- Getting to know the UK
- Technology
- Sport and Exercise
- Health
- Living in a new town.
- talk and write about events in the past
- plan and give a short talk
- compare places, things and experience
- listen for information (TV/radio, phone messages, group discussions)
- make arrangements and appointments on the phone
- use polite forms and tone of voice to obtain information in person and on the phone
- give and discuss opinions on a range of topics
- use sentence stress to emphasise or clarify information
- write using complex sentences and relative clauses (who, which, that)
- understand when to use simple and continuous forms of present and past tenses
- talk about the future
- develop strategies to help spelling
- develop understanding of word families to increase vocabulary
You will also use Word to write letters and other texts on the computer, use the internet to find information and write emails.
This is a lower-intermediate course taught at entry 3. To do this course you need to be able to:
- ask and answer questions confidently on personal information, routines and likes
- give a simple description of a past event
- offer an opinion on a discussion topic
- follow spoken instructions.
Class work will sometimes be in pairs or small groups, and sometimes as a whole group. Your tutor will also work with you individually. There will be reading, writing, speaking and listening activities, and games. DVDs, the interactive whiteboard, and computers will help your learning. There will be a small amount of homework after every lesson.
You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a file to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will give you verbal feedback as a group during the session, and written feedback on paper exercises you do. You will decide individual learning goals with your tutor and see your progress over the term by keeping a folder of work. There will be informal tests, practice exams and the Speaking and Listening exam at the end of term.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will be able to talk to your tutor in one to one meetings about your learning (tutorials) or ask to speak to the tutor. Your tutor will ask for your feedback as a group at different times during the session and in course reviews. You will be able to formally record your views on the course at the end.

You will take the entry 3 Speaking and Listening exam and have the opportunity to complete the full entry 3 certificate with courses ES302, ES304 or ES306, which include Reading and Writing exams.
