Course outline

What is the course about?

This is an English language course for learners with skills going towards entry level 1, 2 and 3. It is a workshop class led by a tutor from the ESOL section. Learners are supported in class 1-1 or in small groups by trained volunteers under the guidance of the tutor. Learners will develop their skills in writing, reading, speaking and listening. In addition, individual key areas needing attention will have special focus.

What topics will we cover?

Topics will relate to life in the UK, looking for work, communicating at work, study skills, socialising and education, cultural life and community.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Improve the language skills in your target areas. Your tutor will help you identify the specific areas you need to work on. We will set targets and review them regularly.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for students at level entry level 1, 2 and 3. Most students will be students who have been studying in the department already.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught 1-1 or in small groups, and sometimes as a whole group. You will work with a volunteer as well as with a fully trained teacher. Personal targets are set and reviewed each session. There will be homework after each session and we will show you ways of working independently to direct your own studies.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring lined paper, a ring binder and a pen.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Move on to the next workshop class in February or Cambridge ESOL level 1 or 2 exam course as appropriate. Your tutor will guide you in this.
