Course outline

What is the course about?

This course will help you gain confidence in working with numbers and measurements in your everyday life. You will take an entry 1 or 2 exam at the end of this course.

What topics will we cover?

-common shapes
-working with money and time
-basic measurement
-introduction to fractions
-reading from tables and diagrams.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-read time in common formats
-add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers
-use halves and quarters
-calculate the cost and change when shopping
-measure and compare length, width and capacity
-recognise some 2D and 3D shapes.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You need to be able to speak fluently and understand words used in basic maths. You should be able to read and write in short sentences. You will be able to add and subtract single digit numbers, check your answers using a calculator, and recognise and select coins and notes.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching will be in a supportive group setting, which involves pair and small group work. The interactive whiteboard and computers will help your learning. Handouts and worksheets will allow you to build up a folder of work. You will be given homework on a regular basis.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a file to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will give you verbal feedback as a group during the session, and written feedback on the paper exercises you do. You will decide individual learning goals with your tutor and see your progress over the term by keeping a folder of work.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will be able to talk to your tutor in one to one meetings about your learning (tutorials) or ask to speak to the tutor. Your tutor will ask for your feedback as a group at different times during the session and in course reviews. You will be able to formally record your views on the course at the end.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

When you successfully complete this course and pass the entry 2 exam you can join an entry level 3 maths course.
