Course outline

What is the course about?

This course will help you develop a more advanced understanding of problem solving, formulas and calculation. The course will enable you to develop your skills in using percentages, fractions, measurement and data management. The teacher will encourage you to use your new skills in everyday situations. You will take the Level 2 Adult Numeracy Test at the end of this course.

What topics will we cover?

The course will cover the more complex aspects of fractions, percentages, formulae and forms of mathematical data.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-add, subtract, multiply and divide decimal numbers and check answers to calculations
-calculate with fractions
-calculate percentages, including percentage change, increase and decrease
-understand and use equivalences between fractions, decimals and percentages
-understand and use positive and negative numbers
-understand and calculate ratio, scale and proportion
-work with formulae (example: converting between Centigrade and Fahrenheit)
-convert between currencies and between imperial and metric measures
-recognise and use 2D representations of 3D objects
-find area, perimeter and volume of common shapes
-interpret statistical measures and tables, graphs and diagrams
-express and compare probabilities.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for fluent speakers of English. You should be able to add, subtract, divide and multiply using a range of methods, work with basic fractions, calculate percentages, interpret information from tables, charts and graphs, and convert units of measure.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching will be in a supportive group setting, which involves pair and small group work. The interactive whiteboard and computers will help your learning. Handouts and worksheets will allow you to build up a folder of work. You will be given homework on a regular basis.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a file to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will give you verbal feedback as a group during the session, and written feedback on the paper exercises you do. You will decide individual learning goals with your tutor and see your progress over the term by keeping a folder of work.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will be able to talk to your tutor in one to one meetings about your learning (tutorials) or ask to speak to the tutor. Your tutor will ask for your feedback as a group at different times during the session and in course reviews. You will be able to formally record your views on the course at the end.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

When you successfully complete the course and pass the level 2 test, you could go on to study for GCSE maths.
