This course will give you confidence using English for work, study and socialising. You will develop your English language skills in writing, reading, speaking and listening and take the level 1 Cambridge ESOL Speaking and Listening exam.
Your tutor will decide from a range of topics, and ask you what topics you want to cover. Topics include:
- Life in the UK
- Health
- The News
- Working in an office
- Looking for work
- Study skills
- Higher and Further education in the UK.
- Develop strategies to plan and draft writing
- Produce a range of different types of writing including: letters, descriptions, narratives, instructions, reports, articles, proposals, information sheets
- Use punctuation accurately and effectively
- Evaluate and compare information, ideas and opinions from different sources
- Identify the main points and specific detail in a range of different types of text of varying length and detail
- Use formal and informal language appropriately
- Use reference books and online sources to build your vocabulary and check your work
- Summarise information
- Use compound and complex sentences with more than two clauses including relative clauses, reported speech and question tags
- Use a range of simple, continuous, perfect, active and passive verb forms
- Use a range of phrasal verbs and use particle order correctly
- Develop the correct use of indefinite, definite and zero articles
- Use a range of discourse markers to organise text.
This is an intermediate course taught at level 1. To do this course you need to be able to:
- plan and develop a three-paragraph piece of writing
- understand the main points in audio and written texts
- follow spoken instructions
- contribute to discussions and ask/answer questions on familiar and current topics
It is also useful if you can word process, use Google and bookmark WebPages.
Class work will sometimes be in pairs or small groups, and sometimes as a whole group. Your tutor will also work with you individually. There will be reading, writing, speaking and listening activities, and games. DVDs, the interactive whiteboard, and computers will help your learning. There will be a small amount of homework after every lesson and you will be shown ways to work independently if you want to do more.
You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a file to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will give you verbal feedback as a group during the session, and written feedback on paper exercises you do. You will decide individual learning goals with your tutor and see your progress over the term by keeping a folder of work. There will be informal tests, practice exams and the Reading and Writing exams at the end of term.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will be able to talk to your tutor in one to one meetings about your learning (tutorials) or ask to speak to the tutor. Your tutor will ask for your feedback as a group at different times during the session and in course reviews. You will be able to formally record your views on the course at the end.

You will take the level 1 Cambridge ESOL Reading and Writing exams. If you have not already done the Speaking and Listening exam you could complete the full certificate on a subsequent course. You can progress on to a level 2 course if you get the full certificate.
