What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an upper intermediate course taught at level 2. To do this course you need to be able to:
- organise and develop ideas in a five-paragraph written text
- use a range of types of sub-clauses in sentences (e.g. even though…, if I had…)
- identify key points in written and audio texts
- recognise and correct an increasing range of grammar, spelling and punctuation errors.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Class work will sometimes be in pairs or small groups, and sometimes as a whole group. Your tutor will also work with you individually. There will be reading, writing, speaking and listening activities, and games. DVDs, the interactive whiteboard, and computers will help your learning. There will be a small amount of homework after every lesson and you will be shown ways to work independently if you want to do more.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a file to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will give you verbal feedback as a group during the session, and written feedback on paper exercises you do. You will decide individual learning goals with your tutor and see your progress over the term by keeping a folder of work. There will be informal tests, practice exams and the Reading and Writing exams at the end of term.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will be able to talk to your tutor in one to one meetings about your learning (tutorials) or ask to speak to the tutor. Your tutor will ask for your feedback as a group at different times during the session and in course reviews. You will be able to formally record your views on the course at the end.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
