This beginners course will help you develop your English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. You will take the speaking and listening exam and have the opportunity to complete the full entry 1 certificate by progressing onto ESOL reading and writing entry 1 in February. We aim to prioritise places for adults permanently settled in the UK.

This course will give you confidence using English for work, study and socialising. You will develop your English language skills in writing, reading, speaking and listening. You will take the entry 1 Cambridge ESOL Speaking and Listening exam.
Your tutor will decide from a range of topics, and ask you what topics you want to cover. Topics include:
- daily life
- likes and dislikes
- shopping, food, local transport
- the neighbourhood
- friends and family
- the home & work
- travel
Citizenship is included in the course.
- introduce yourself
- ask for and give personal information
- write simple sentences
- use full stops and capital letters
- spell key words
- recognise and use new words
- complete simple forms
- ask for things and for information
- give and ask for simple directions and instructions
- use present tenses
- begin to talk about the future
- read and write days of the week, months of the year, numbers 1- 20
- write notes for people
- read simple texts
You will also begin to use a computer keyboard, do interactive language activities on the computer and write some information using Word.
This is a course for beginners and is taught at Entry 1.
To do the course you need to be able to:
- write the letters of the Roman alphabet
- begin to say and spell your name and address
- recognise some signs and written words
- follow simple spoken instructions
It is useful to have basic computer skills (use a mouse, use enter and letter keys).
Class work will be in pairs, small groups and as a whole group. Your tutor will also work with you individually. There will be reading, writing, speaking and listening activities, and games. DVDs, the interactive whiteboard and computers will help your learning. There will be a small amount of homework after every lesson.
You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a file to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will give you verbal feedback as a group during the session, and written feedback on the paper exercises you do. You will decide individual learning goals with your tutor and see your progress over the term by keeping a folder of work.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will be able to talk to your tutor in one to one meetings about your learning (tutorials) or ask to speak to the tutor. Your tutor will ask for your feedback as a group at different times during the session and in course reviews. You will be able to formally record your views on the course at the end.

You will take the entry 1 Speaking and Listening exam and have the opportunity to complete the full entry 1 certificate by going onto ESOL Reading and Writing entry 1 (ES102) in February.
