This course will help you develop your maths skills for everyday use. You will learn to estimate, measure, use fractions and understand decimals. You will learn to use your skills in everyday situations such as shopping, DIY and banking. You will take an entry 3 exam at the end of this course.

-using numbers to add, take away, multiply and divide
-fractions and decimals
-calculator work and checking calculations
-measuring and comparing shape and size using metric and imperial units
-handling and managing data.
-understand and use whole numbers to 1000
-add and subtract with three digit numbers
-multiply and divide two digit numbers by single digit figures
-estimate calculations and check accuracy
-approximate by rounding numbers less than 1000 to the nearest 10 or 100
-read, write and understand common fractions and decimals
-read, measure and record time
-read and interpret distance
-read, estimate, measure and compare length, weight and capacity using metric and imperial units
-extract information from lists, tables, diagrams and simple charts
-recognise, name and draw 2D and 3D shapes.
This course is for fluent speakers of English. You should be able to recognise and use whole numbers up to 100, use halves and quarters, add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers, calculate the cost and change from shopping and compare some measurements.
Teaching will be in a supportive group setting, which involves pair and small group work. The interactive whiteboard and computers will help your learning. Handouts and worksheets will allow you to build up a folder of work. You will be given homework on a regular basis.
You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a file to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will give you verbal feedback as a group during the session, and written feedback on the paper exercises you do. You will decide individual learning goals with your tutor and see your progress over the term by keeping a folder of work.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will be able to talk to your tutor in one to one meetings about your learning (tutorials) or ask to speak to the tutor. Your tutor will ask for your feedback as a group at different times during the session and in course reviews. You will be able to formally record your views on the course at the end.

When you successfully complete this course and pass the entry 3 exam, you can join a maths level 1 course.
