Holistic approaches to anatomy and physiology

Explore anatomy and physiology using two different perspectives: the western model of structure and function and the Five Element model from Chinese medicine. We will integrate these two viewpoints
to give a broader understanding of how the body influences the mind and vice versa. No prior knowledge is required. Suitable as pre-requisite (at City Lit) for ITEC.

Course outline

What is the course about?

You will explore different models of the body from Eastern and Western perspectives to increase awareness of how each of the systems interact and how the body, mind and emotions are interlinked.
Previous knowledge of anatomy & physiology is not essential but would be helpful. This course would also be useful for bodyworkers, therapists and movement professionals. Ideal for those wishing to continue onto ITEC or CYQ accredited courses.

What topics will we cover?

- Review basic Anatomy & Physiology of most systems of the body
- The Chinese five element model in relationship to the body
- Shen and Ko cycles
- Connections that can be made between mind and body
- How to incorporate a holistic approach to health and illness.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Define the different qualities of each element
- Relate each element to an anatomical system
- Identify how the systems of the body interrelate using the five element model
- Recognise how the body restores balance through homeostasis.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for anyone interested in deepening their understanding of the body. No prior knowledge of anatomy and physiology is necessary. All you need is a willingness to be involved with the tasks and exercises. You are required to read and write short sentences, follow verbal instructions and extract information from handouts.

PRE-BODYWORK QUESTIONNAIRE
Please use the following list as a guide when deciding whether you wish to undertake this course. If you have suffered from any of the conditions listed, please check with a GP whether it is suitable for you to undertake a bodywork course and bring a referral letter from your doctor to your tutor. If you have not checked, or if it is not suitable, please do not participate in a bodywork class/course.

However, a student could be asked to leave the course if any situation were to arise which could endanger the well being of that student, or any other student. It is for instance not suitable to work on another student, if you are taking medication that affects your concentration.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Through guided visualisations and exercises in order to gain a first hand experience of your own anatomy
- Exercises, pair work and movement to experience your own anatomy
- Feedback and class interaction using drawings and discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?
