This is a theory based course where you will learn the following components:
Structure, function, and common disorders of the Skin, Skeletal, Muscular, Lymphatic, Endocrine and Neurological systems; the Cardiovascular and Respiratory systems; the Digestive, Genito Urinary and Endocrine systems.
You will also learn about the structure and function of cells, tissues and membranes, and medical terminology used in Anatomy and Physiology (as detailed in the textbook).
The Syllabus has been set by our awarding body I.T.E.C. (International Therapy Examination Council) and you will be going forward for a theory examination at the end of the course.
This course forms Unit 1 of the ITEC Holistic Massage Diploma course.

-Explain the structure, function, and common disorders of the Skin and their contraindications
-Explain the functions and structure of the skeletal system and recognising aspects of its pathology
-Identify the structure and function of the cell and explain the process of Mitosis, Meiosis
-Identify the structure and function of main tissue types
-Identify the function and structure of the Circulatory and Lymphatic systems
-Explain the diseases and disorders of the Circulatory and Lymphatic systems
-Explain the structure and functions of the Neurological system
-Explain the effects of diseases and disorders of the nervous system
-Identify the structure and function of the Endocrine System
-Explain the causes and effects of various endocrine diseases and disorders
-Identify the functions and structure of the Respiratory system
-Explain the causes and effects of diseases and disorders of the Respiratory system
-Identify the structure and function of the Digestive System
-Describe a range of diseases and disorders of the Digestive system
-Identify the structure and function of the Urinary system
-Explain the causes and effects of the disorders and diseases of the Urinary system
-Explain the structure and function of the Reproductive System
-Discuss the causes and effects of the diseases and disorders of the Reproductive system
- Use the correct terminology when discussing or writing about anatomy and physiology;
- Reach the required standard necessary to sit the ITEC examination theory paper in Anatomy and Physiology

ITEC Level 3
You would have attended an introductory course in Anatomy & Physiology or have the equivalent experience to gain entry to this course. You should be able to:
Use different text to obtain and summarise information
Respond to points made within a text
Use different styles, format and structure, formal and informal for different purposes or audiences
Listen to complex information and respond appropriately
Present information clearly and persuasively. Make significant contributions and help move discussions forward
Additional information
You should be aware that a minimum of 80% attendance is necessary to complete the course. You are also expected to participate to the best of your ability and to adhere to the colleges Equal Opportunities Policy while undertaking the course. The policies of the college will be discussed during the first session.
Application for this course will require you to fill in an application form.
Applications will be assessed and successful applicants will be offered a place. Please contact the Health and Movement Studies office or Advice and Guidance for an application form, or apply on line through the Citylit website.
This is mostly a theoretical course. The teaching methods used will be: talk by tutor, pair work and group work. The students will be encouraged to contribute to the learning sessions.
Resources which will be used include:
OHT; Handouts; Whiteboard; Flipchart; Video; Course book; Colouring book; Posters; Coloured Pencils; Plastic Models
Please note that you will be expected to study extensively outside the course hours.
Exam dates: Theory: 23/6/12.
You will be expected to buy 2 course books - these are essential text books. They will cost approximately £40. You will need to buy folders to organise your work in, bring coloured pencils, paper and pens to class.
The exam fee is included in the course cost. This fee is non-refundable and the exam must be taken on the date set by the Institute.
This course requires the completion of an application form.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Assessment methods will be both formal and informal. You will be given self-assessment sheets with which you can fill in to follow your own progression route. The tutor will also have assessment forms to monitor the progress of individual students. Homework and assignments will be set at the tutor's discretion, and a mock theory examination will be held prior to the ITEC theory examination itself. The formal assessment will be a 1 hour theory paper set by ITEC.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

- On successful completion of the course, you will have gained the Unit 1 component of the ITEC Holistic Massage Diploma.
- Students often use this course to attend higher level courses where anatomy and physiology at this level may be a pre-requisite.
