The Foundation Certificate is about recognising your achievements when you have completed a range of courses on the Health and Movement Studies programme.
The programme will introduce you to and will provide an overview of complementary and natural therapy topics.
The programme aims to provide you with an introduction to practical, theoretical and philosophical issues within these fields.
Dates of tutorials: 9 Oct and 4 Dec 2010; 29 Jan, 2 Apr, 30 Apr, 21 May and 25 Jun 2011. These times will contribute to your total amount of hours.
You will need to complete a minimum of 120 course hours within two years, as well as the relevant course work to be able to gain the Foundation Certificate recognised by IPTI (Independent Professional Therapists International).
There are two compulsory modules:
- Anatomy & Physiology: an Introduction*
- Holistic Medicines: East Meets West
*Please let us know if you have already attended Anatomy & Physiology courses up to ITEC standard as you may be exempt from this module.
Choose courses from the City Lit Programme to make up your own combination:
- Introduction to Nutrition
- Introductory Massage courses
- Introductory Reflexology courses
- Introductory Aromatherapy courses
- Herbal Medicine courses
- Homeopathy
- Alexander Technique
- T’ai Chi
- Chi Kung
- Stress Management and Relaxation
- Feldenkrais
- Meditation
- Pranayama
- Yoga
- Reiki healing
- Exercise classes

- On-Site Massage
Please note that you can only count one term of the same course towards the certificate. So if you attend the autumn term of ‘Yoga: beginners’, this would count towards the certificate. However, if you also attend the spring term these additional hours will not count.
Students attending ITEC courses within the Health and Movement Studies programme: your course will count towards 30 hours of the certificate.
The courses must be taken within the City Lit Health & Movement programme. Courses undertaken elsewhere will not be counted towards certification.
PROJECT
When you have completed the 120 hours of tuition, you will need to hand in a written project. This project should be about 1000 words in length.
In the project we would like you to:
- write about the range of courses you have attended
- write about why you chose this combination of courses
- briefly discuss the principles of these subjects then say how they have changed your attitudes to your own health
- finally tell us which future studies you are planning.
Please hand the project in to the Health & Movement Studies office within 4 weeks of completing your courses. If you need help with your written project, you can get in touch with the course tutor on the dates listed above.
- Define the term holistic
- Differentiate Eastern and Western approaches to health
- Select a specific therapy for further study, should you want a career as a complementary therapist
- Discuss your area of interest with fellow students in the tutorial groups
- Complete a 1,000 word essay detailing how your attitudes to your own health have changed as a result of participation on the course.
You should be able to write a short text, locate information using handouts, books and the internet; listen and respond to requests, participate in discussions and follow verbal instructions; observe and copy physical movements and have the ability to use spatial awareness within a group. This is an excellent programme for those that wish to pursue a career in alternative health and are unsure what direction to take. No prior experience is necessary.
This will depend a little on the combination of courses that you choose. However, most of the courses will include talk by tutor, demonstrations, practical work, small and large group work. You will also usually be asked to study further in your own time and to complete an essay.
Please read the course outline for your course choices. They will give you more information about specific requirements.
Please refer to the City Lit website www.citylit.ac.uk or the prospectus for details on fees for your chosen courses.
You should buy a folder to keep you course materials in.
Registration for the Foundation programme is £28.
Please note: if you choose to do the certificate over two years you will need to re-register and pay another £28 for each year of continued study.
Please note: you will still need to pay the quoted fee for your chosen courses.
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
