An introduction to Traditional Medicine from Eastern and Western perspectives, familiarising the student with the many different approaches to maintaining and promoting health.
This course will give an overview of the holistic approach to health from the Eastern traditions of Chinese, and Ayurvedic medicine, and from the Western traditions of Herbal and Homeopathic Medicine.
- Define the term holistic
- Differentiate Eastern and Western approaches to Health
- Identify herbs to treat common minor complaints
- Perform basic Yoga postures with guidance
- Differentiate Yin from Yang
- Perform a short series of Chi Kung exercises to promote Health
- Differentiate the Tridoshas of Ayurvedic medicine
- Identify a range of different Homeopathic remedies that can be used for self treatment and for family and friends.
You should be able to write a short text, locate information using handouts, books and the internet; listen and respond to requests, participate in discussions and follow verbal instructions; observe and copy physical movements and have the ability to use spatial awareness within a group.
The course will cover theoretical and practical work.
Theory: talks, reading, writing, including a project, individual and pair work, group work.
Practical: preparing, tasting and using different herbal remedies; Acupressure, Do-In, Chi Kung, Yoga. Please wear loose comfortable clothes as each module will have some practical work.
