Course outline

What is the course about?

This course will give you the opportunity to add a new, exciting technique to your existing massage skills and enhance your client's treatments.

What topics will we cover?

- Practical Kahuna massage techniques for back, legs, arms, hands, feet, abdomen and face
- Using hands and forearms to apply strokes.
- Technique will cover all body parts, using strokes similar to effleurage.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Advance existing therapeutic massage skills to give clients a more satisfying experience
- Provide an alternative treatment where necessary
- Incorporate new technique within your chosen therapy
- Give a full body Kahuna massage
- Name and briefly describe Kahuna principles.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need to have successfully completed the ITEC Holistic Massage Diploma, or equivalent, and be regularly practising massage. You are required to read and write short sentences, follow verbal instructions and extract information from handouts.

If you have suffered from any of the conditions listed, please check with a GP whether this course is suitable for you and bring a referral letter from your doctor to your tutor. If you have not checked, or if it is not suitable, please do not participate in a bodywork class/course.

- Epilepsy

- An untreated medical condition
- Spinal injuries
- A recent operation
- Severe skin disorders
- Severe mental illness
- On medication
- Cardiovascular disorders (high blood pressure, severe varicose veins, heart problems, thrombosis)
- Bone or joint disorders (Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis)
- Pregnancy (or post natal)
- Endocrine disorders
- Knee Problems (for Shiatsu, Thai massage and introductory massage courses only)
- Is there anything else we should know about your health before you enrol for a course? If there is, please let the Health & Movement Studies team know.

If accepted onto a course, a student could be given alternative practical tasks and adjustments may be made where reasonable. However, a student could be asked to leave the course if any situation were to arise which could endanger the well being of that student, or any other student. It is for instance not suitable to work on another student, if you are taking medication that affects your concentration or if you have uncontrolled fits which could cause a danger to others during a relevant activity.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Discussion; demonstration; practice; pair work; feedback and questions. This is a purely practical course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring massage oil, a small bowl to put oil in and 2 towels. Preferably also, some antiseptic wet wipes and plasters in case of cuts/grazes.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. There will be an opportunity to evaluate your course at the end.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Students can go on to do further courses at the City Lit including ITEC in Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Indian Head Massage, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Sports Massage, On-site Massage, Traditional Thai Massage to Professional Level, or Advanced Massage Techniques for Massage Professionals.
