Course outline

What is the course about?

This course aims to help to educate therapists on how they can use different types of stretching techniques both during and after their massage treatments. The course will cover both active and passive stretching techniques that can be applied to muscles usually targeted within sports massage treatments and common sports injuries.

What topics will we cover?

- How to effectively utilise stretching techniques within a sports massage treatment, thus to allow relaxation of tight and stiff muscles, aiding relaxation and enabling the therapist to work at a deeper muscular level
- Demonstration of active stretches to clients for the major muscle groups worked on and targeted for common sports injuries
- The use of passive stretching and PNF stretching techniques on and off the couch
- The use of stretches and what type is appropriate.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Demonstrate active stretches to clients which they can utilise at home as part of a home care strategy
- Explain the different types of stretching techniques
- Perform different stretching techniques on clients
- Explain the appropriate use of stretching techniques during your sports massage treatments
- Demonstrate how to stretch a client both on and off the couch
- Explain the importance of posture when performing stretches and how to protect your own body to reduce the amount of stresses and strains placed on it when performing stretches.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for qualified sports massage therapists who hold the ITEC Sports Massage Diploma or equivalent.

You should be able to:
Read simple sentences, write a short text, follow instructions, ask and respond to straightforward questions. Clarify and confirm understanding. Read time in common date formats.

If accepted onto a course, a student could be given alternative practical tasks and adjustments may be made where reasonable. However, a student could be asked to leave the course if any situation were to arise which could endanger the well being of that student, or any other student. It is for instance not suitable to work on another student, if you are taking medication that affects your concentration or if you have uncontrolled fits which could cause a danger to others during a relevant activity.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by a mixture of tutor delivered presentations and demonstration. There will be group work exercises and pair work in relation to the performing of stretches. This is a one day course so no work outside this day will be set by the tutor.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will be required to bring with you pens and paper. You will also be required to bring with you shorts, t-shirt and trainers and you will be required to take part in the practical component for the different stretching techniques. You will also be required to bring 2 large towels, a small amount of massage oil and anti-bacterial wipes for the practical section on utilising stretches within massage treatments.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?
