Advanced exercise and fitness knowledge: CYQ level 3

This professional course will lead you towards gaining a nationally recognised qualification in Pilates and/or yoga instructor training. This element covers anatomy, physiology and biomechanics. Prior completion of 'Teaching exercise and fitness: CYQ level 2' is necessary. Additional attendance required Saturdays 2 July and 16 July. Course outline

What is the course about?

This course leads to a qualification in advanced Exercise and Fitness knowledge at level 3. You will develop your knowledge of functional anatomy and bio-mechanics as well as gaining management skills in assessing and prioritising risk. Additional attendance is required: Saturdays 2 July and 16 July.

Additional information
There is an exam at the end of the course which takes the form of a multiple choice test. There must be a minimum of 80% attendance in order to fulfil the criteria to take the assessment.
Please note that you are required to hold a current First Aid certificate to be able to work as a movement instructor.

What topics will we cover?

- Structure of spine and postural deviations
- Muscle changes associated with lack of stabilisation exercises
- Muscles: attachments, actions
- Nervous and endocrine system: main functions, components and role
- Functional kinesiology
- Energy systems
- Principles, applications and benefits of Progressive Fitness Training and positive lifestyle
- Dietary role of nutrients. Roles of carbohydrates, fat and protein as fuels for aerobic and anaerobic exercise
- Assessing and managing risk
- Developing professional relationships
- Collecting information.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Describe the relationship between the major bones, joints and muscles and the effects of exercise
- Describe the structure of the spine and postural deviations and local muscle changes associated with lack of specific stabilisation exercises
- Describe postural and core stability
- Explain exercises associated with stabilisation
- Describe the role and function of the nervous system
- Describe the principles and variables of progressive fitness training
- Describe the application of fitness principles to progressive training
- Describe the benefits of fitness training
- Explain the constituents of a healthy balanced diet and the role nutrition plays in exercise
- Describe procedures for assessing and managing risk in the fitness environment
- Describe how to assess and prioritise individual risk factors for client participation
- Describe the features of a professional relationship with clients
- Describe the features of a professional relationship with colleagues, external bodies and other fitness professionals
- Describe methods of collecting information from clients

Award: On successful completion of the theory exam you will receive the CYQ Level 3 theory certificate in Advanced Exercise and Fitness Knowledge.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need to have completed CYQ / OCR Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Exercise & Fitness before attending this course. You should be able to demonstrate a commitment to exercise and a good level of fitness. You should be able to describe and discuss information taught. You will need to interpret measurements provided in basic diagrams.

If you have suffered from any of the conditions listed, please check with a medical practitioner whether it is suitable for you to undertake an exercise programme and bring a referral letter from your doctor to your tutor. If you have not checked, or if it is not suitable, please do not participate in an exercise or movement class.

- Do you have a bone or joint problem, such as Arthritis, Osteoporosis, back or knee problems?

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Lectures and discussion
- Visual aids - skeleton, videos, models
- Group, pair and individual work
- Handouts - coursework and worksheets
- Use of resistance equipment
- Demonstrations and practice.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring writing materials (pens and paper) and a folder to compile coursework in.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

This course requires the completion of an application form.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be continuous assessment throughout the course by the tutor. Tests will be given regularly.
Final assessment: A final exam paper, CYQ coursework folder and home tasks.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
