Course outline

What is the course about?

This course leads to qualified gym instructor status. You will learn how to collect and analyse client information to design a safe and effective gym-based exercise programme.
Additional information
The course runs on Fridays at City Lit Keeley St and Saturdays at London Metropolitan University Gym (close to Holloway Road tube) Course dates: 8 June 2012 - 23 Jun 2012. Practical assessments will be on 28 and 29 June 2012. There must be a minimum of 80% attendance in der to pass the course.

Friday theory sessions are held at City Lit Keeley Street and Wednesday practical sessions are held at London Metropolitan University gym located across from Holloway Road tube station.

Please note that you are required to hold a current First Aid certificate to be able to work as a gym-based instructor. Please download an application form from the link below, and read the full course outline before applying.

What topics will we cover?

The course will provide a progressive learning experience to plan, instruct and deliver safe and effective gym-based classes and programmes:
- Collecting and using information to create effective exercise programmes
- demonstrate and monitor safe and effective use of equipment
- applying teaching methodologies to introduce a range of exercises in relation to clients' goals
- positive interaction with clients to promote retention and adherence to exercise
- health and safety issues.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- collect and analyse client information in order to plan a safe and effective gym-based programme
- identify and agree short, medium and long term goals with clients
- suggest relevant adaptations to allow for individual client needs and differences
- use logical and progressive teaching methodologies to introduce a range of exercises in relation to clients' goals.
- observe clients/ members at all times in order to correct unsafe technique where required
- monitor maintenance schedules and assist in the upkeep and cleanliness of the environment and all associated gym equipment
- positively interact and motivate clients/members using appropriate strategies to promote retention and adherence to exercise

Award: CYQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym).

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need to have completed Exercise to Music Instructor Training (CYQ Level 2) before attending this course. You should be able to demonstrate a commitment to exercise and a good level of fitness. You need to be used to studying and have sufficient writing skills to undertake coursework e.g. you will need to be able to:
- spell common words correctly
- select, read and summarise texts
- present information clearly in writing and when speaking
- extract information from lists, tables, diagrams and simple charts
- use IT skills including working with Word documents, simple tables and emails.

Application for this course is in two phases:
1) Written application
2) Group advisory interview/workout

To assist us in providing a safe and healthy environment for you to exercise in please take a moment to consider the list below. If you have suffered from any of the conditions listed, please check with a medical practitioner whether it is suitable for you to undertake an exercise programme and bring a referral letter from your doctor to your tutor. If you have not checked, or if it is not suitable, please do not participate in an exercise or movement class.

- Do you ever have pains in your chest?
- Have you had any operations or injuries in the last year?
- Do you often feel faint or have spells of dizziness?
- Are you receiving medication for any condition?
- Do you have high blood pressure?
- Is there anything else we should know about your health?
- Do you have a bone or joint problem, such as Arthritis, Osteoporosis, back or knee problems?

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Lectures
- Demonstrations
- Micro-teaching
- lots of practical work
- students will be expected to carry out practical tasks outside course hours and to regularly attend fitness classes.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please wear exercise clothing and trainers.
You will need to purchase an exercise manual and folder to prepare and file your coursework.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

This course requires the completion of an application form.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. - Through CYQ portfolio
- Micro teaching
- Practical exam and final assessment on practical work. Exam dates are: XXX
- Lesson plans
- Tutor monitoring records and individual student progress reports.
