Learning how to design and appropriately structure a chaired based exercise class for older adults or people who are unable to take part in a general exercise situation and need the modification of being able to do the majority of their exercise in a seated/supported position. The course runs in Sundays from 22 Apr - 20 May 2012 10:00 - 17:30. Practical assessments are on 02/06/2012 and 03/06/2012.
- Age related changes to anatomy and physiology
- How the above changes affect exercise prescription and ability
- Recommendations and guidelines for exercise for the older adult
- Screening tests that can be used to determine readiness to exercise for older people
- The referral routes available for older people unable to exercise
- How to deliver a safe and effective prescribed programme of chair-based exercises to the frailer older person.
- Discuss age related changes to anatomy and physiology
- Recognise how the above changes affect exercise prescription and ability
- Know the recommendations and guidelines for exercise for the older adult
- Use appropriate screening tests to determine readiness to exercise for older people
- Identify the referral routes available for older people unable to exercise
- Deliver a safe and effective prescribed programme of chair-based exercises to the frailer older person.
This course is CYQ level 2. There are no formal prerequisites for this qualification, however it is expected that candidates will have experience of working with older people or have experience in the delivery of exercise programmes.
Teaching will be through lecture, discussion, small group and pair work. Theory will be presented on PowerPoint and practical elements will be addressed and practised in practical sessions. You will be required to do homework and preparation outside class hours.
There may be additional costs if you wish to buy particular books.
This course requires the completion of an application form.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be a formal assessment at the end of the course.
