Course outline

What is the course about?

- Learning underpinning theoretical knowledge of anatomy and physiology for movement and exercise.
- Increasing students' theoretical understanding of movement and fitness as well as of the general health of adults.
- Providing a theoretical understanding of the major systems of the body and how these are affected by exercise and physical activity
Additional Information
There is a minimum attendance requirement of 80% in order to pass the course.
It is recommended that you get your First Aid certificate while taking this course as you will be required to have this once you complete the full CYQ qualification.

What topics will we cover?

- Basic anatomy and physiology - knowledge of structure and function of the body
- Cardio, respiratory, skeletal and muscular systems
- Energy systems and their relation to movement and exercise
- Components of fitness and the principles of training
- Nutrition and exercise
- Health and safety factors relating to exercise and the promotion of health.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-Identify a range of facts connected to bone growth
-Identify functions of the skeleton
-Name and locate major types of joints
-Identify the effects of exercise on bones, joints, muscles and cardiovascular system
-Describe the main characteristics of muscle groups and their individual location
-Describe the differences between tendons and ligaments
-Describe the main energy sources for muscular contraction and their effects on the aerobic and anaerobic systems
-Demonstrate knowledge of the location and functions of the Cardiovascular system
-Discuss the components of physical fitness in relation to the principles of training
-Adapt physical training to meet individual needs
-Provide balanced dietary advice to others.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is CYQ Level 2, incorporating;
unit 1 - Anatomy and physiology

Students should be aware that home study will be required
Students should wish to work in the movement/exercise/sports related field.
You need to be able to study independently and have sufficient written skills to undertake coursework e.g. you will need to be able to:
- spell common words correctly
- select, read and summarise texts
- present information clearly in writing and when speaking
- extract information from lists, tables, diagrams and simple charts
- use IT skills including working with Word documents, simple tables and emails

To assist us in providing a safe and healthy environment for you to exercise in please take a moment to consider the list below. If you have suffered from any of the conditions listed, please check with a medical practitioner whether it is suitable for you to undertake an exercise programme and bring a referral letter from your doctor to your tutor. If you have not checked, or if it is not suitable, please do not participate in an exercise or movement class.

- Do you ever have pains in your chest?
- Have you had any operations or injuries in the last year?
- Do you often feel faint or have spells of dizziness?
- Are you receiving medication for any condition?
- Do you have high blood pressure?
- Is there anything else we should know about your health?
- Do you have a bone or joint problem, such as Arthritis, Osteoporosis, back or knee problems?

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Lectures and discussion
- Visual aids - skeleton, videos, models
- Group, pair and individual work
- Handouts - coursework and worksheets
- Use of resistance equipment

You should be aware that home study will be required.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring writing materials (pens and paper) and an A4 folder to compile coursework in. A course manual and workbook are included in your fee.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

This course requires the completion of an application form.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be continuous assessment throughout the duration of the course by the tutor. Tests will be given regularly.
Final Assessment: 2 x 50 minute exam papers, CYQ coursework folder and home tasks.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
