What is the course about?

This course will introduce you to the fundamental theory and practices of therapeutic massage. Gain an insight into how massage can alleviate stress and promote relaxation and healing through touch. An excellent introduction for those of you wishing to develop a new skill or follow on to accredited courses such as ITEC.

What topics will we cover?

This course will cover the value of touch, the importance of hygiene in massage practice and general client care. You will also be introduced to the indications and contraindications of massage. Gain basic knowledge of a variety of massage techniques including effleurage, petrissage and percussion on areas of the body such as the back, legs, arms, hands and feet.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Guide a person into a comfortable position in preparation for a massage treatment
- Identify a suitable massage oil to use on a person - considering skin types and reactions
- Name some indications and contraindications to massage
- Name and perform some basic massage movements (to include effleurage, petrissage and percussion)
- Briefly describe the some values of touch in a safe and supportive environment
- Recognise the importance of hygiene before, during and after a massage treatment.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge or experience of massage is required.
You should be able to:
Follow instructions, make contributions in group discussions, write and read short text. Use simple measurements.

PRE-BODYWORK QUESTIONNAIRE

The following list is to be used as a guide when deciding whether you wish to undertake a course in body work. We have strict guidelines as we aim to protect the health and safety of students in training and those they practise on during and after the course, whilst providing widest possible access. If you have suffered from any of the conditions listed, please check with a medical practitioner whether it is suitable for you to undertake a bodywork course and bring a referral letter from your doctor to your tutor. If you have not checked, or if it is not suitable, please do not participate in a bodywork class/course.

- Epilepsy
- Diabetes
- An untreated medical condition
- Spinal injuries
- A recent operation
- Severe skin disorders
- Severe mental illness
- On medication
- Cardiovascular disorders (high blood pressure, severe varicose veins, heart problems, thrombosis)

- Is there anything else we should know about your health before you enrol for a course? If there is, please let the Health & Movement Studies team know.

If accepted onto a course, a student could be given alternative practical tasks and adjustments may be made where reasonable. However, a student could be asked to leave the course if any situation were to arise which could endanger the well being of that student, or any other student. It is for instance not suitable to work on another student, if you are taking medication that affects your concentration or if you have uncontrolled fits which could cause a danger to others during a relevant activity.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be guided through the course by way of lecture, small group work and pair work. You will be able to work with a variety of fellow participants of varying ages, backgrounds, genders and abilities, where you will learn experientially. The emphasis will be on the practical application of massage using couches provided by the college.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to bring with you to class the following items:

- 3 large towels (one for underneath, two for the top)
- Antiseptic wet wipes (for hand and feet cleaning)
- Non-perfumed massage oil (e.g. almond or grapeseed) for massage purposes. Choose a suitable oil for your skin type and one that you are happy to have applied to your body. *Please note: If you are allergic to nuts, choose an oil that is not nut-based.
- Pen and paper

Please also be aware that personal hygiene is an important aspect to consider when practicing massage as you will be in close contact with other people.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
