What is the course about?

This is an integrated course consisting of 6 Units: It will enable you to gain the Diploma in Massage Techniques and be able to work in the field of Complementary Therapy as either an employed or self employed practitioner.

The 6 units are:
Unit 340: Provide Body Massage for Complementary Therapies
Unit 341: Reflective Practice for Body Massage
Unit 346: Knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology for Complementary Therapies
Unit 347: Knowledge of Less Common Pathologies
Unit 348: Principles and Practice of Complementary Therapies
Unit 350: Health, Safety and Hygiene for Complementary Therapies

Exam dates:
Theory exam: 17th July 2012
Practical exam: 28th July 2012

The course will provide you with an avenue of learning which will enable you to reach the required standard set by the governing body ITEC (International Therapies Examinations Council) so that you will become a proficient massage practitioner.

You should be aware that a minimum of 80% attendance is necessary to complete the course. You are also expected to participate to the best of your ability and to adhere to the colleges Equal Opportunities Policy while undertaking the course. The policies of the college will be discussed during the first session.

Please note that you are required to obtain a First Aid Certificate whilst on the course or be working towards one ( either St John Ambulance or Red Cross)

Application for this course is in two phases:
1. Written application form
2. Group interview which will include a test on Anatomy and Physiology, some practical hands on work plus a short literacy test.

What topics will we cover?

Unit 346: Knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology for Complementary Therapists

This unit will cover the structure, function and disorders of the major and minor systems of the body: Histology, Skin, Skeletal, Articular, Muscular, Nervous, Endocrine, Respiratory, Cardiovascular, Lymphatic, Digestive, Genito Urinary and Reproductive.

Unit 340: Provide Body Massage for Complementary Therapies

All elements required for the preparation and provision of a full body massage, including the classical massage movements and their physiological effects. Codes of conduct and communication, legislation and history of Swedish Massage and philosophy. We will also cover selection, storage and correct usage of oils.

Unit 341: Reflectice Practice for Body Massage

Describe the basic elements of reflective practice and reflect on your own attitudes, beliefs, interests, priorities and values in relation to personal growth as a body massage therapist.

Case studies: 12 case studies to eb performed ( 6 clients x 2 treatments each )

Unit 346: Knowledge of Anatomy Physiology and Pathology for Complementary Therapies

Identify the organisation of the body to include common pathologies of the skin, hair and nails,skeletal system, muscular system, nervous system, endocrine system,respiratory system, cardiovascular system, lymphatic system, digestive system, urinary system and reproductive system.

Unit 347: Knowledge of Common Pathology for Complementary Therapies

Identify the signs and symptoms of less common pathologies of the body systems.


Unit 348: Principles and Practice of Complementary Therapists

Recognise key historical factors and the main influences on working within the therapy industry, including key aspects of good practice.

Unit 350: Health Safety and Hygiene

You will cover health and safety procedures and policies.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Gain the practical and theoretical skills in order to provide massage treatments for the purposes of relaxation and stress release.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

ITEC Level 3
Skills required:
-Introductory course on massage, shiatsu or aromatherapy
-Introductory course on Anatomy & Physiology
-Literacy and Numeracy skills to Level 2 to include:
Reading:
Be able to use different texts to obtain and summarise information
Detect opinion, meaning and bias in writing and respond to points made within a text

Writing:
Use different styles, format and structure, formal and informal for different purposes or audiences
Write complex sentences with few errors

Speaking/listening:
Be able to listen to information and respond appropriately
Present information clearly and persuasively
Adapt verbal contributions to suit the audience and situation
Make significant contributions in discussions

Numeracy/Maths:
Recognise, name, draw or use 2D and /or 3D objects (optional choice when working on projects)
Extract, interpret and/or create information from lists, tables, diagrams, graphs and charts
Understand percentages and fractions, using halves and quarters
Use and calculate ratio, scale and proportion
Read time in common date formats
Calculate costs and change from transactions in pence and whole pounds
Read, estimate, measure and compare length, weight, height and capacity as required

Access to the internet when undertaking project work

PLEASE SEE THE PRE-BODYWORK CHECK LIST:
Students with any of the listed medical conditions should attach written letters of approval from their GP with their application form. Without these letters, any consideration for acceptance onto a course can be denied. It will also be at the discretion of the tutor team and head of programme whether candidates are suitable for placement.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching methods: lecture, wordstorming, small group work, pair work, demonstration, Q&A and role play.
Assessment methods: multiple choice questions, 4 major projects, Case Studies.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to purchase the follow items to bring to class:

Practical sessions:
Massage oil ( Sweet Almond or Grapeseed) bowl, 2 large towels, one fitted towelling sheet, antiseptic wipes, sundries (tissues, wet wipes, plasters).

Theory sessions:
Course books, folder for handouts, paper, pens, colouring pencils.

For Practical Exams: you will need a professional uniform (tutor will give details) and a full set of white towels. You will also need sundries such as a clipboard for your consultation, oil, bowl, wet wipes, tissues, water, cups, and a mini first aid kit. It is also advisable to have an up-to-date First Aid certificate ( Red Cross or St John Ambulance First Aid at Work)

To gain the full diploma you will also need to complete Unit 349 Business Practice for Complementary Therapists (taught separately) Please contact the health and movement studies dept for dates and times of these courses.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

This course requires the completion of an application form. There will be a group interview which will include a test on Anatomy and Physiology, some practical hands on work plus a short literacy test.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Examinations will include:

1. 1 hour Mock Theory paper
2. 1 hour Theory paper ( multiple choice) on Anatomy and Physiology
3. Projects ( to be assessed by the tutor, quality assessed by Tutor coordinator, then externally verified by ITEC)
4. Practical Pre-Assessment (45 mins)
3. Practical Exam (45 mins)
4. Treatments: 12 (6 clients x 2 treatments each) with outcomes recorded as per the ITEC documentation

Exam dates:
Theory exam: 17th July 2012
Practical exam: 28th July 2012.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

On successful completion of the course you will be able to :
- Practise as a professional massage practitioner
- Join a professional association such as Embody or CThA and gain insurance
- Follow up with other professional practitioner courses such as Sporst massage Level 4, Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Traditional Thai Yoga Massage, Sports Massage, On Site massage, Indian Head Massage, Lymphatic Drainage Massage, Stone Therapy.
