An opportunity to learn basic massage skills and achieve a sense of relaxation and recognise where tension is held in the body. PLEASE NOTE: ENROLMENT IN PAIRS ONLY.
- Introduction to hygiene, towel management and care of the person being massaged
- Back/shoulders clothed/sitting
- Back/shoulders unclothed/lying down using oil
- Head/neck, face
- Legs or arms
- Introduction to the effects of stress on the different body systems and the effect of massage.
- Safely guide a person into a suitable position for massage with attention to hygiene and care of person
- Perform a variety of effective massage techniques to various areas of the body
- Practise some easy relaxation techniques
- Describe some of the effects of stress has on the body and how massage may help relieve this.
Introductory level - no previous knowledge required. You are required to read and write short sentences, follow verbal instructions and extract information from handouts.

The following list is to be used as a guide when deciding whether you wish to undertake a course in body work. We have strict guidelines as we aim to protect the health and safety of students in training and those they practise on during and after the course, whilst providing widest possible access. If you have suffered from any of the conditions listed, please check with a GP whether it is suitable for you to undertake a bodywork course and bring a referral letter from your GP with enrolment form to Health & Movement Studies during Advice & Guidance hours for validation. If you have not checked, or if it is not suitable, please do not participate in a bodywork class/course.

- Severe skin disorders
- Severe mental illness

- Cardiovascular disorders (high blood pressure, severe varicose veins, heart problems, thrombosis)
- Bone or joint disorders (Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis)
- Pregnancy (or post natal)
- Endocrine disorders
- Knee Problems (for Shiatsu, Thai massage and introductory massage courses only)

If accepted onto a course, a student could be given alternative practical tasks and adjustments may be made where reasonable. However, a student could be asked to leave the course if any situation were to arise which could endanger the well being of that student, or any other student. It is for instance not suitable to work on another student, if you are taking medication that affects your concentration or if you have uncontrolled fits which could cause a danger to others during an activity.

You will need to bring with you to class the following items:
- 3 large towels (one for underneath, two for the top)
- Antiseptic wet wipes (for hand and feet cleaning)
- Base oil(e.g. olive, almond or grapeseed) for massage purposes. Choose a suitable oil for your skin type and one that you are happy to have applied to your body. *Please note: If you are allergic to nuts, choose an oil that is not nut-based.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
