This is a follow-on course from the ITEC Holistic Massage Diploma.
The course provides information Units 416 and 417 of the ITEC Syllabus. You will cover sports injuries, the underlying anatomy and physiology, and suitable treatments for injuries through massage and exercise. A progressive learning structure for these subjects is provided to enable students to reach the required standard necessary to take the examination set by ITEC (International Therapy Examination Council).
Additional information
You should be aware that a minimum of 80% attendance is necessary to complete the course. You are also expected to participate to the best of your ability and to adhere to the colleges Equal Opportunities Policy while undertaking the course. The policies of the college will be discussed during the first session.
Please note that you are required to hold a current First Aid certificate to be able to work as a bodywork therapist.
Due to the nature of this course, you will not be entitled to transfer to a different course after the course has started.

- Gain skills and qualification in sports massage at Level 3 for those of you interested in the sports industry,
- Focus on the development of the major key skills and the wider key skills in a sports massage context, such as communicating with clients, working with others, and problem solving,
- Develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for the successful performance in employment in the sports industry
Practically you will be able to:
- Integrate existing massage skills into the sports massage framework,
- Develop your massage skills further and incorporate techniques such as Manual lymphatic drainage, Neuromuscular technique (NMT), Muscle energy technique (MET), Soft tissue release (STR), connective tissue massage (CTM) Proprioreceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF),
- Incorporate the use of stretching massage movements such as Connective tissue massage and recognise the benefits of stretching,
- Explain and utilise techniques such as thermotherapy and cryotherapy.

This is a substantial course and you should be aware before enrolling on this course that time needs to be set aside for home study and that there will be written assignments every week set by the tutor. Regular attendance is required.

- Recognise the structure and function of the Urinary system

- Recognise and understand the differences between men and women
- Recognise and understand the underpinning principles of sports injuries
-Recognise and understand the principles of nutrition in relation to Sports injuries
Unit 417 - Applying Sports Massage Methods to Non Pathological Tissue
- Be able to work within agreed standards of practice
- Be able to prepare for sporst massage methods
- Be able to assess clients
- Be able to devise sports massage strategies for clients
- Be able to apply sporst massage methods
- Be able to evaluate sporst massage methods
- Be able to produce, maintain and store records.
ITEC Level 3
To gain entry to this course you will need to have successfully completed the ITEC holistic massage diploma. You should regularly be practising massage, and have kept up to date on anatomy and physiology.
Applications for this course will require you to fill in an application form.

Students with any of the listed conditions should attach written letters of approval from their GP with their application form. Without these letters, any consideration for acceptance onto a course can be denied. It will also be at the discretion of the tutor team and head of programme whether candidates are suitable for placement.
The course content will be both Theoretical and Practical.
The teaching methods used will include: Talk by tutor - Group work - Pair work - Massage work - Movement work - completing Case Histories - Videos - and much more.
Exam dates:
Theory: 14/6/12
Practical: 28/6/12
You will have to complete written assignments every week and set aside time for home study.
You will need to bring to class your own towels, oils, wet wipes etc. You will need to wear a white uniform and supply a set of white towels for the practical examination. The tutor will give advice on reading material during the course.
The exam fee is included in the course cost. This fee is non-refundable and the exams must be taken on the date set by the Institute.
This course requires the completion of an application form.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Assessment will be through students completing:
- Practical Exam - 1 hour - examined by an external examiner from ITEC
- Theory exam - 1 hour multiple choice ( 416 ) + 1 hour Multiple choice exam ( 417)
Case studies x 15 recorded treatments.
