Course outline

What is the course about?

Learn how to give a professional hot stone therapy treatment. Prior experience: you should have completed the ITEC holistic massage diploma course. You can download an application form at www.citylit.ac.uk.

What topics will we cover?

The course will cover the history and concept behind Stone Therapy, the Chakras and the Aura. The course also covers common ailments, contraindications and legislation applicable to treatment. You will learn about selection and placement of the stones, the hot stone heater used as well as the physiological and psychological effects of the treatment. Other topics include health and safety while working in the salon, working in the beauty related industries and client care and communication.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Complete the following units attached to the ITEC Level 3 certificate in Stone massage therapy:

Unit 613 Monitor and Maintain Health and Safety Practice in the Salon
: Carry out a risk assessment
: Monitor health and safety in the salon

Unit 819 Working in the Beauty Related Industry
:Recognise the key characteristics of the beauty related industries
: Access sources of information on organisations, services, occupational roles, education and training opportunities within the beauty related industries
: Describe the basic principles of finance and selling within the beauty related industries
: Recognise the main forms of marketing and publicity used by the beauty related industry
: Describe good working practices associated with the beauty related industries

Unit 821 Client Care and Communication in Beauty Related Industries

:Communicate and behave in a professional manner when dealing with clients/in the workplace
:Use effective communication and consultation techniques to identify treatment objectives
:Effectively manage client expectations, confidentiality and complaints

Unit 826 Apply Stone Therapy Massage

: Prepare themselves, client, tools, equipment and work area for Stone Therapy Massage
: Explain the contraindications that prevent or restrict Stone Therapy Massage
: Describe the types of stones, their properties, uses and storage
: Describe the historical cultural background for Stone Therapy Massage
: Communicate and behave in a professional manner and follow health and safety practices
: Describe the structure, function position and action of the muscular system
: Describe the location and function of the skeletal system
: Describe the structure and function of the circulatory and lymphatic systems
: Describe the physical and psychological effects of stone therapy

Assessments:

1 multiple choice ( 45 mins) theory exam
1 practical exam
4 recorded treatments

3 x assignment (Unit 821, 819, 613).

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

ITEC Level 3 Certificate
You will need to have completed the ITEC Diploma in Holistic Massage or equivalent
Read and summarise information from different sources
Use different styles, format and structure, formal and informal
Listen to complex information and respond appropriately
Present information clearly and persuasively
Recognise the purpose of Centigrade and Fahrenheit on a thermometer
Read time in common date format.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Lecture
Practical Demonstration

Outside of class time, you will need to complete homework set by the tutor, study for theory examinations, practice the practical work, and compile case studies ( this time could take at least the same amount of time per week as spent in the classroom per week)

Exam dates:
Theory:28/3/12
Practical: 30/3/12.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The college has in house stone equipment, however, whether you are working from home, are a visiting therapist, or work in a clinic, it is essential that you have access to a stone heater, and a set of stones. You may need to purchase course books as recommended by your tutor.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

This course requires the completion of an application form.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
