ITEC level 4 certificate in sports massage therapy

The main aim of the ITEC Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage therapy is to enable learners to gain the practical and theoretical skills necessary to provide Sports Massage therapy. It has been designed for practitioners currently working in Sport and Active Leisure, including osteopaths, physiotherapists, sports therapists and massage therapists. Prior experience: you should have completed the ITEC level 3 diploma in massage and be confident working independently. What is the course about?

The purpose of this specialist qualification is to enrich practitioners' understanding of advanced anatomical, physiological and pathological principles relevant to the application of sports massage. It will provide learners with advanced palpation skills and those needed to analyse posture and range of movement. It will also provide practitioners with a range of advanced skills and massage techniques to prevent and manage injury in sport and active leisure. Practitioners will learn to critically evaluate massage strategies and methods to inform on future treatments.

Additional information

You should be aware that a minimum of 80% attendance is necessary to complete the course. You are also expected to participate to the best of your ability and to adhere to the colleges Equal Opportunities Policy while undertaking the course. The policies of the college will be discussed during the first session.

Please note that you are required to hold a current First Aid certificate to be able to work as a bodywork therapist.

Due to the nature of this course, you will not be entitled to transfer to a different course after the course has started.

What topics will we cover?

Unit 418 - Practical anatomy and physiology for sports massage
Unit 419 - Applying massage methods to prevent and massage injury

Exams dates:
Theory: 20th June 2012
Practical: 21st June 2012.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Understand the relevant anatomy, physiology and pathology of massage
- Palpate structures of the musculoskeletal system
- Analyse posture and range of movement
- Understand the effects of massage methods on the body and mind
- Work within agreed standards of practice
- Prepare for massage methods
- Assess clients
- Devise massage strategies for clients
- Apply massage methods
- Evaluate the effectiveness of massage methods.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

ITEC Level 4

To gain entry to this course you will need to have successfully completed the ITEC Level 3 sports massage or holistic massage diploma. You should regularly be practising massage, and have kept up to date on anatomy and physiology.

Applications for this course will require you to fill in an application form.
Applications will be assessed and successful applicants will be offered a place. Please contact the Health and Movement Studies office or Advice and Guidance for an application form or apply on line through the Citylit website.

You should be able to:
Identify the purpose of texts
Actively respond to points within a text
Plan and draft written work and start to organise it into paragraphs
Make relevant contributions and respond appropriately to others
Use formal and informal language appropriately
Present information clearly
Read time in common date format

Students with any of the listed conditions should attach written letters of approval from their GP with their application form. Without these letters, any consideration for acceptance onto a course can be denied. It will also be at the discretion of the tutor team and head of programme whether candidates are suitable for placement.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course content will be both Theoretical and Practical.
The teaching methods used will include: Talk by tutor - Group work - Pair work - Massage work - Movement work - completing Case Histories - Videos - and much more.

You will have to complete written assignments every week and set aside time for home study.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to bring to class your own towels, oils, wet wipes etc. You will need to wear a white uniform and supply a set of white towels for the practical examination. The tutor will give advice on reading material during the course.
The exam fee is included in the course cost. This fee is non-refundable and the exams must be taken on the date set by the Institute.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

This course requires the completion of an application form.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Assessment will be as follows:
Unit 418 - Practical anatomy and physiology for sports massage
Theory assessment: This unit will be assessed by an externally set multiple choice and short answer question paper.
Treatment evidence: 5 treatment evidence forms for Unit 418 covering analysis of posture and range of movement
Unit 419 - Applying Massage methods to prevent and massage injury
Practical assessment: All candidates will be examined via a practical examination of their technical skills and treatment techniques.
Treatment evidence: Evidence of 100 hours of treatments to include: 50 hours of event work to be recorded in event log and 50 hours of treatment evidence. Consultation including medical history, treatment details, after/homecare, candidates and client signature and treatment date.
