Course outline

What is the course about?

If you have completed the ITEC Level 3 diploma in Aromatherapy or Reflexology Techniques, this course provides you with the opportunity to take a further unit (343 - Reflexology; 345 - Aromatherapy) to enhance your qualification to the full Diploma. Learn theoretical and practical aspects of reflective practice for reflexology or aromatherapy.

Additional information:
1: You should be aware that a minimum of 80% attendance is necessary to complete the course. You are also expected to participate to the best of your ability and to adhere to the college's Equal Opportunities Policy while undertaking the course. The policies of the college will be discussed during the first session.
2: Students will be required to undertake 40 case study treatments at home and record evidence as per the ITEC documentation including the required reflective practice.

What topics will we cover?

Reflective practice
The course includes areas on the ITEC syllabus: Models of reflection, developing and applying reflective practice in your treatments, completing case studies showing evidence of reflective practice and identifying life long learning opportunities and self development.

This will enable you to:
a) Critically compare different theories of reflective practice
b) Distinguish and develop documentation to record your own reflective practice and evidence the role of self awareness in personal and professional life
c) Review methods and outcomes of reflective practice and draw conclusions for further development of professional therapy skills
d) Develop a personal plan for continuous professional development, updating skills & knowledge
e) Complete and record 40 professional case study treatments and present these for an ITEC exam (the case studies are to be completed outside class time).

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- complete no less than 40 full treatments and record all elements of those treatments including a consultation chart, full medical history, client profile, client feedback, home care advice and self reflection.
- work within a standard code of professional ethics which will enable you to insure yourself against public liability.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You must have completed your diploma in ITEC Level 3 Reflexology or Aromatherapy Techniques.
You will also need to have sufficient literacy and numeracy skills to include:
Reading: Use different texts to obtain and summarise information
Detect opinion, meaning and bias in writing and respond to points made within a text
Writing: Use different styles, format and structure, formal and informal for different purposes and audiences. Write complex sentences with few errors.
Speaking and listening: Listen to information and respond appropriately. Present information clearly and persuasively. Adapt verbal contributions to suit the audience and situation. Make significant contributions to discussions.
Numeracy: Recognise 2D and 3D objects. Extract information from lists, tables, diagrams, graphs and charts.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This is a theoretical and practical course. The teaching methods will be: Presentation by tutor, group work. Students are encouraged to contribute to learning sessions. Regular home study and practical work are required for this course and will be a minimum of 10 hours per week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

2 foolscap folders for course notes and case studies (case studies to be presented separately).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
