Course outline

What is the course about?

Many studies have shown that the ancient Buddhist techniques of mindfulness can help people who feel that their lives out of control, or that they are too busy really to savour their life much. Mindfulness has also been found to be effective in dismantling ‘bad or sad’ moods, and controlling overwhelming feelings. The course will be based around meditation and practical techniques for developing mindfulness and awareness.

What topics will we cover?

A variety of meditation practices will be taught and led during the course, including basic sitting practices from the Buddhist tradition and mindfulness in movement. The main focus of mindfulness will be the body, thoughts and feelings, and communication, but the course will be also concerned with specific applications of mindfulness - walking listening, eating etc. Students will be expected to commit to practising between classes.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Recognize the principles of mindfulness, how it works and how to make it work for you
- Apply mindfulness in daily life
- Gain more control over your emotional life and manage difficulties more effectively through practise of the principles and applications.
- Deepen your meditation practice through your mindfulness practice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For beginners, and for those who have some experience in meditation. You are required to read sentences, follow verbal instructions and extract information from handouts.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through led meditations, exercises, group discussion, handouts, visual aids, practical demonstrations, OHP.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No other costs.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
