Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is a practical introduction to the techniques of mindfulness and compassion, derived from the Buddhist tradition. Practise a deceptively simple method of taking control of the way your mind works, to make it work for you rather than against you. Discover the mind's natural capacity to enjoy life more fully, by learning how to live more in the present.

What topics will we cover?

You will learn a variety of meditation practises including body awareness meditation, the mindfulness of breathing, the cultivation of compassion and walking meditation as well as the principles of mindfulness. We also touch on mantra meditation and formless meditiation. You will learn how to work with difficulties in meditation and to cultivate the benefits of meditation. You will be expected to commit to practising between sessions.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Recognise the principles of neditation and mindfulness
- Apply mindfulness in daily life
- Practise meditation effectively and regularly
- Recognise a positive change in the way you experience everyday life.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for absolute beginners to meditation and those who want to renew or refresh their practice. You are required to read short sentences, follow verbal instructions and extract information from handouts.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Down-to-earth discussion and exercises
- Guided meditations
- Practical demonstrations with handouts
- Group discussions
- You will be expected to practise between sessions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No other costs.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
