What is the course about?

This course is based on Jon Kabat-Zinn's mindfulness based stress reduction programme. You will learn how to focus your awareness, cultivate calmness and develop non-judgemental acceptance through a range of meditation practices. The course can help you reduce stress , manage anxiety and live life more fully. You do not need to have a specific physical or psychological difficulty to find it helpful. PLEASE NOTE COURSE TIMES ARE WED 18:00 - 20:00 with an additional Sunday session on 17 June from 10:30 - 15:30.

What topics will we cover?

The nature of mindfulness meditation
The relevance of mindfulness work to stress and anxiety
Developing awareness of thoughts, feelings and behaviours
Identifying different habits of mind
A variety of formal and informal meditation practices
The relationship of mindfulness to cognitive therapy
The importance and helpfulness of acceptance
Reviewing home practice
Setting up an ongoing practice programme.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Identify the relevance of mindfulness work to stress and anxiety
- Identify key personal habits of mind and understand how these might help or hinder you
- Incorporate meditation practices into your daily life
- Have a greater acceptance of aspects of your experience.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for beginners to meditation and those who want to renew or refresh their practice. You are required to read sentences, follow verbal instructions and extract information from handouts.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by two mindfulness teachers. Carolyn Cheasman and Judy Holman are both health professionals who use mindfulness approaches in their work. Both tutors have established mindfulness meditation practices and are currently studying for an MA in mindfulness based approaches. This will be a highly experiential course. Each week you will participate in meditation practices led by the tutors. Home practice is an integral and essential part of the course. You will need to commit to setting aside 45 minutes per day for this using the CD's provided on the course. There will be some theory input relating to stress and anxiety and there will be time each week for participants to discuss their experience of the practices.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No. The cost of CD's essential to the course is included in the course fee.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. Please telephone Carolyn Cheasman directly on 020 7492 2578 or email carolyn.cheasman@citylit.ac.uk.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will have the opportunity to reflect on the impact the course is having on you throughout.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
