Course outline

What is the course about?

The course will help you identify your relationship to stress and look at strategies to overcome some of the signs and symptoms.

What topics will we cover?

- An assessment of what causes stress and examples of how stress is experienced physically, emotionally, psychologically, and in behaviour patterns
- Different strategies to recognise and reduce the effects of the stress response
- A variety of relaxation techniques
- Tips for better sleep
- Untangling thought patterns to assist in the reduction of stress
- Time management.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Recognise your own early signs of stress
- Carry out a range of techniques for minimising stress once it has occurred
- Select strategies to eliminate some of the stressors in your life.
- Practise a series of exercises to reduce stress.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is open to all; due to the nature of stress it is important to be able to manage your own areas of vulnerabilities during the sessions. You should be able to write a short text, locate information using handouts, books and the internet; listen and respond to requests, participate in discussions and follow instructions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

A variety of teaching methods will be used including individual work, pair work, group work, demonstrations, group discussion, use of DVDs, videos and tapes. You will be required to complete a stress diary and to practise some of the techniques in-between sessions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Some helpful books and tapes will be discussed in class.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
