Course outline

What is the course about?

Hula Hoop workout, a new body toning class in which you will learn to hoop on your torso and limbs. This workout uses over 30 core muscles.

What topics will we cover?

Hoop on your body, arms and legs improving the functions of your cardio-vascular system. Balance your pelvis in a natural healthy way.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Use core muscles effectively
- Perform moves with a hoop both on and off the body
- Demonstrate improved balance and coordination
- Describe increased strength and stamina
- Mobilise and free the spine using the hoop
- Show improved self-esteem and confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for beginners. Hooping is way more fun than the hula hooping you might remember as a child. Bigger and heavier hoops are easier to use and 'friction' tape used helps keep them on your body. Even if you start out believing you can't hoop, with one of these hoops, you can! Nearly everyone can hoop, regardless of age, size or sense of rhythm.

You will need to be able to read and write short sentences, follow verbal instructions, observe and copy physical movements and use spatial awareness within a group.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is lead by the tutor, who will demonstrate the moves and give you continuous feedback. You will be encouraged to participate and learn by discovery as well as instructions from the tutor.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No extra costs involved. Please wear trainers for your comfort.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 201 of the 10-11 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

World Hoop Day has become the international hula hoop holiday celebrating the circle around the world - next World Hoop days are on October 10, 2010 and November 11, 2011.
