» Find another course in Health and movement studies» Search all coursesOn this course you are introduced to gentle exercises drawn from a range of movement backgrounds. The movements are based on yoga postures, more conventional flexibility exercises, as well as Pilates movements, combining these with flowing movements to music. The exercises aim to energise as well as de-stress the mind and body. Relaxation techniques will be practised, enjoyed and explored.
The class will normally start and / or end with relaxation. Mobility and warm-up exercises will be followed by movement sequences, You will be introduced to standing / sitting and floor based Pilates combinations, yoga based postures and other flexibility exercises. A variety of relaxation methods will be explored and enjoyed.
- Recognise ways to increase flexibility
- Demonstrate an increased range of motion, through regular practice
- Adapt techniques to develop body awareness (as you stretch or move a part of your body, you will focus and become more in touch with it)
- Use relaxation exercises to help still the mind
- Identify ways in which you can relax and switch off outside the class
- Identify exercises that are specifically useful to your body
- Perform a variety of movement sequences safely and effectively.
- Perform simple movement sequences using a Chi ball.
No prior knowledge or experience is needed. You will be encouraged to work at a level that is suitable for you.
You will need to be able to read and write short sentences, follow verbal instructions, observe and copy physical movements and use spatial awareness within a group.

To assist us in providing a safe and healthy environment for you to exercise in please take a moment to consider the list below. If you have suffered from any of the conditions listed, please check with a medical practitioner whether it is suitable for you to undertake an exercise programme and bring a referral letter from your doctor to your tutor. If you have not checked, or if it is not suitable, please do not participate in an exercise or movement class.

Due to the nature of the class it will be tutor-led. The tutor will demonstrate, encourage, correct and provide alternative movement sequences where suitable. You will actively participate in the exercises, take part in demonstrations, enjoy relaxation, provide suggestions, share experiences and provide feedback.
You should wear clothing that is easy and comfortable to move in. You may want to bring something extra to keep warm in for floorwork, stretches and relaxation. The exercises are performed bare footed on mats. Please do not eat immediately before class. Bring water to drink.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

It is beneficial to make movement, stretching and relaxation part of your daily life. Advice on physical activities or relaxation techniques to suit your individual wants and needs will be provided upon request. After this course you might want to do a course in Pilates, Yoga, Chi Kung , Meditation and / or Stress Management.
