The course looks at the body cross culturally. It focuses on ideas attributed to the body and how humans imagine and live their body in a variety of social and cultural settings.
Starting from basic anthropological concepts, the course covers body decoration and alteration, ideas of health and ability, the concept of the person, self and identity, biological and cultural characteristics that make up human bodies’ complexity.
Explain cultural and biological differences attributed to bodies cross-culturally;
identify similarities and differences in how humans see their bodies;
summarise the multiplicity of meanings expressed by bodies in various social and cultural settings.
This is a continuation course for beginners with no experience of Anthropology, but may also be taken by new students. An enthusiasm for learning and an open and critical mind will enhance your enjoyment and benefit from this course. On joining the class you should be able to read and comment upon articles and extracts from anthropological texts and journals. You should also be prepared to discuss this reading in class. You should also be able to interpret basic statistical data.
The sessions will run as informal seminars with ample time for discussion and the exchange of ideas. Videos and articles by leading anthropologists will be used to illustrate the themes. You should be prepared to contribute to discussion and good natured debate.
Please bring writing materials.
