Course outline

What is the course about?

The aim of the course is to help you to understand different economic terms and concepts, using examples from current issues.

What topics will we cover?

- How the market works
- Investment and the decline of the British economy
- Inflation
- Unemployment
- Economic growth
- Taxes and public spending
- The difference between Keynsianism and Monetarism.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Identify and analyse key economic terms and concepts.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Some reading (and keeping up with the newspapers) and occasional preparation will be expected of you from time to time (this should be enjoyable). Some understanding of economics or a willingness to do some additional reading will help you to keep up with the course and maintain your interest.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

All classes will involve discussions between tutor and participants in an informal atmosphere. Handouts will be provided wherever possible.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Suggested reading:
Approaching Economics - Adrian Perry
A Question of Economics - Peter Donaldson
The Profit System - Green and Sutcliffe
Economics- Alain Anderton.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
