Course outline

What is the course about?

This course offers an introductory overview of key aspects of how to start your own business. You will work on the production of a business plan relevant to your own particular business and it is therefore important to have focussed on an idea for your own business.

What topics will we cover?

The necessary elements for producing a business plan including business legalities, market research, business finance, advertising and promotion, book-keeping, cash flow forecast, profit and loss account, business technology, communication skills.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Identify an appropriate business idea
- Outline sources of advice, assistance and regulation
- Identify and complete financial forecasts
- Produce a comprehensive, effective business plan
- Produce a specimen plan for a new business venture.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

There are no qualifications necessary but you will need to have the reading and writing skills to cope with the course work and produce an extended business plan at the end.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is participative, involving group work, discussions and practical activities. Assignments are used to compile a business plan, which is assessed by the tutor.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Materials will be provided during the course and relevant books recommended.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. To be assessed for this course please come along to a Humanities drop-in-advice session. These take place as follows:
Term time
Mondays and Thursdays 12.30-13.30 and 17.30-18.30
Non term time
Mondays 17.30-18.30
Thursdays 12.30-13.30.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. The course offers a City Lit certificate if you complete an appropriate Business Plan. You will receive regular feedback from the tutor and, at the end of the course, you and the tutor will assess your progress.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
