The objective of the course is to appreciate some of the issues facing anyone already in, or intending to start a business in, a self-employed capacity. It aims to provide a basic knowledge of various public and private organisations (along with relevant functions) helpful in the process of setting up a business, understanding of business fundamentals and a study of various options open to anyone in order to reduce uncertainties in business start-up. The course is designed as a short introduction for those exploring the possibility of starting their own business.
Various aspects of business will be introduced. These will include:
- Legal entity
- Pre-requisites of business set-up
- The management of financial and human resources
- Understanding analysis of the market
- Cash flow and profit and loss statements, including forecasting techniques.
- Identify the various legal, financial and accounting requirements needed to operate a business operation.
Introductory.
All classes will involve discussion between tutor and participants within an informal but focused atmosphere. Handouts will be provided on relevant issues.
Writing materials.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your learning will be assessed through discussion and question and answer. There will be opportunities for you to submit written work or give oral presentations and receive feedback should you wish to do so, and there will be informal opportunities for you to discuss your progress.
