Course outline

What is the course about?

Analysing the work of experienced writers.
Establishing a set of criteria necessary for writing literary fiction, short stories, novels, etc.

What topics will we cover?

Discussion of techniques to improve writers work, such as:
Genre; story/plot; structure; narrative voice; character; point of view
Pace and tension
Research
Dialogue
Style
How to produce a manuscript
Critical analysis of students work.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- respond to, and assess, pieces of writing with acumen and sensitivity.
- identify the basic issues involved in writing fiction, short stories, novellas, novels, etc.
- apply your critical and editorial skills on your own work.
- produce submissions for comment on a Regular basis.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is aimed at experienced writers who have previously attended writing courses and who have some years experience of writing fiction.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through discussion, peer evaluation and tutor feedback.

The Tutor
Mary Flanagan is an Irish-American writer living in London. Her three novels (Trust, Rose Reason and Adele) and two collections of short stories (Bad Girls and The Blue Woman) have been widely and well received and translated into eight languages.
Mary has taught creative writing at the University of East Anglia, Leicester University, Birkbeck University, The Arvon Foundation and the Skyros Centre in Greece. She has been a Royal Literary Fund Writing Fellow at the University of Leicester. Her literary criticism and features have appeared in all major newspapers. She currently reviews for The Independent and is at work on another collection of short stories.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Students, where possible, will be asked to provide photocopies of their work for discussion.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
