Course outline

What is the course about?

Creative and imaginative approaches to writing non-fiction.

What topics will we cover?

Exploring ways to approach non-fiction in creative and innovative ways

Thinking critically about creative non-fiction through analysis of writers who have successfully innovated

Exploring some of the leading genres of creative non-fiction such as travel-writing, life-writing, the essay, historical writing, and writing which crosses all the barriers of genre.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Think critically and with understanding about creative non-fiction

Feel confident about making your own experiments in creative non-fiction writing.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No formal requirements except a good standard of literacy and a love of reading.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Analysis of short pieces in class through group discussion.

Regular individual short writing exercises largely set as homework but discussed and evaluated in class

Formal instruction from the teacher combined with group discussion

Tutor Biography
Nicholas Murray (www.nicholasmurray.co.uk) has published more than a dozen books in a variety of genres: biography, fiction, poetry, criticism, topography, some of which have blended fiction and non-fiction. His book about the British poets of the First World War, The Red Sweet Wine of Youth is published in February 2011.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

The Humanities department offers a range of creative writing courses, including Autobiographical Writing, Biography Writing (term 1), Writing your Family Biography (term 1), Writing Family History (term 3).
