Course outline
What is the course about?
A day of creative play at writing and imagination games. The aim will be to stimulate and energise and give you ideas for your writing.
What topics will we cover?
- Introduction to each other and the topic
- Writing games to stimulate imagination and ideas
- Word games
- Finding characters from names
- Using images in your work, exercises in how to make images.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
- Explore your creativity through the power of words
- Escape the constraints of the logical mind.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
For beginners and more experienced writers who want some fun and stimulation. The ability to speak and write fluently in English is useful in order to benefit from this course.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
By writing pieces and by commenting and discussing each other’s work. There will be much discussion and sharing
of ideas, playing and practical writing, aimed at stimulating you and generating raw material for art and giving you ideas you might take away and develop.
The Tutor
Chris Sykes is a poet and playwright. His poetry includes A Cargo of Balloons, Listening to the Dark, Having an Osprey about the House (Magpie Press). He has also published poems in various UK and USA literary magazines as well as in various anthologies. He has had plays produced: The Great Lucifer at the Old Fire Station Oxford (June 1988), Marry me you Idiot, Jermyn Street Theatre London May 2002, and Playing Away at the Lilian Baylis Theatre, Sadler’s Wells. He has taught Creative Writing at the Universities of Oxford and Warwick and at City University and is currently a Convenor of Creative Writing at the University of Sussex.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?
No.
What feedback will I get?
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
