Course outline

What is the course about?

An inspirational day of playing and experimenting with different methods in order to kick start your creative writing. Using games, stories, objects, art, drawing, and writing exercises to demonstrate that anything can stimulate writing. We will find ways to trick your inner critic, push through writers block, as well as discover some basic techniques to enable you to write.

What topics will we cover?

- introduction to each other and the topic
- name games - using name as the starting point for writing
- free writing exercises
- drawings and postcards to create characters
- mapping our experiences to generate material for writing
- writing games to stimulate imagination and ideas
- making imagery.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- be able to write using a variety of tools and techniques
- have written several pieces of work.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

- this course is aimed at beginning writers
- people who want to try creative writing
- advanced writers who want to be inspired and have fun
- the ability to speak and write fluently in English is the only requirement.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

By doing: writing exercises, a great deal of group work, drawing,and playing theatre games. There will be a great deal of discussion, story swaps and peer feedback.

Students should wear comfortable clothes. They must also bring paper, pens and pencils to the class.

The Tutor
Malika Booker is a British writer of Guyanese and Grenadian Parentage with more than 15 years’ experience of
teaching creative writing. Her poems are widely published in anthologies and journals including;Ten New Poets (Bloodaxe, 2010) Bittersweet:
Contemporary Black Women’s Poetry (The Women’s Press, 1998), IC3, The Penguin Anthology of New Black Writing and the India International Journal 2005. She has represented British writing internationally, both independently and with the British Council including Slovenia, New Zealand, India and Azerbaijan. She has also written for the stage and radio. Her one-woman show Unplanned toured nationwide throughout 2007 and her collection Breadfruit was published by flippedeye in 2007, and recommended by the Poetry Book Society. She is currently Poet in Residence at the Royal Shakespeare Company and working on her first full length collection.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
