Does a good tutor get the students they deserve? Here was an outstanding tutor and an outstanding group of bright committed learners. The tutor has the gift of communication and a supreme ability to bring the best out of students. This was an extremely well organised and carefully presented course. Both serious and great fun, as learning should be. Highly recommended.

This course was the most enjoyable creative writing course I have completed at City Lit. It was well structured and comprehensive, using varied examples and well-led group discussions. We talked about and read plays, and were supported through exercises that developed our understanding and fed our imaginations. Highly recommended for all writers

This is a systematic (and sympathetic!) introduction to the craft of playwriting. The tutor introduces students to the elements of plot, story, character, dialogue and structure that any aspiring playwright should understand. She uses contemporary plays as examples and sets invaluable exercises to get you writing and filling those first frightening empty pages. She is perceptive and inspiring - it's clear that her students really value her insight and commitment to serious (including comic!) thinking about writing today.

This oourse is excellent: firstly because the teaching is first rate, our tutor is always well prepared, approaches each topic with an admirable thoroughness, and works from student participation. Secondly, this course attracts students who have a love and knowledge of the theatre. This makes class discussion very illuminating. Thirdly this class is both educative and enjoyable. We will never see a play in the same way again.

The course is run by a playwright from the National and she has a remarkable ability for responding with critical enthusiasm to an enormous range of drama, from Medieval Romance to Country House Farce to Domestic Strife to Beckett inspired Minimalism. And it isn't just a course for beginners: writers who have had work produced find it enjoyable and stimulating. Indeed, in short, it's excellent.
