What is the course about?

Developing your own material and your understanding of how screenwriting works, in a supportive and creative workshop environment.

What topics will we cover?

This course will include structure, visual writing, sub-plot, characterisation, dialogue, script editing and re-writing techniques. The course is project-based, ie. aimed at developing your own work.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Respond to and assess pieces of writing with sensitivity.
- Write a step outline and pitch for your own feature film.
- Write sample scenes for your own feature film.
- Apply an enhanced awareness of technique to your own work and other material critically.
- Assess your own and other material.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have completed either Screenwriting Stage 1 or another introductory screenwriting course plus have a 1-3 page proposal for an original film or tv project from which to work.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Theory, discussion, viewing film clips, reading sample scripts, individual, pair work and group exercises, criticism and assessment by the tutor.

The Tutor
Mike Harris has written and develpoed a drama serial for Pearson Television and a pilot sitcom for BBC Wales.
He sold his screenplay Broken Shell to Channel 4 and has worked as a story editor on The Bill. He has written and directed films for the corporate video market and taught screenwriting and film at colleges and professional bodies throughout the uk.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
